Services offered
The Summary Advice Counsel program addresses unmet legal aid needs by:

  • developing an effective and efficient approach to the delivery of free legal services;
  • improving access to free legal services.

The Summary Advice Lawyer can give clients basic information about:
  • legal terms;
  • how to start or respond to a court application;
  • the implications of agreeing or not agreeing to a court order;
  • court processes;
  • legal documentation;
  • how to apply for Legal Aid; and
  • other aspects of family law.

The Summary Advice Lawyer will not appear in court on behalf of a party and cannot give advice if in a conflict of interest.

The Summary Advice Lawyer also works in cooperation with Court Services and the Nova Scotia Department of Justice to develop and provide information to a broader base of people involved in the family court system, including delivering information sessions or workshops for unrepresented parties.
