ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, May 12, 2014 – The Honourable Peter MacKay, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable James E. McNamara, a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Ottawa is appointed Regional Senior Judge of the East Region, to replace Mr. Justice C. Hackland, who resigned as Regional Senior Judge effective May 8, 2014.

Mr. Justice McNamara was appointed a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in 2008. He served as Administrative Judge in Pembroke and is currently serving as local Administrative Judge in Ottawa.

Justice McNamara received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Ottawa in 1973 and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1975. He practised with Marcus, McNamara and Wilson until the time of his appointment. He was certified as a Civil Litigation Specialist by the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1991.

The Honourable Charles T. Hackland, Regional Senior Judge of the East Region, Ontario Superior Court of Justice, is transferred back to the regular judicial complement (Ottawa) to replace Mr. Justice J. McNamara, who was appointed Regional Senior Judge.

Mr. Justice Hackland was appointed a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in 2003 and Regional Senior Judge of the East Region in 2008. He resigned from that position effective May 8, 2014.

Mr. Justice Hackland received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Ottawa in 1975 and a Bachelor of Civil Law from Oxford University in 1977. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1978. Prior to his appointment to the bench in 2003, he practised with Gowlings in the areas of civil litigation and administrative law.

These appointments are effective immediately.
