Merit Criteria

Essential Qualifications

• At the time of appointment, must have a law degree from a recognized university.
• For Articling Students (not yet eligible for membership in the Bar of one of the provinces or territories of Canada or in the Order of Notaries in the Province of Quebec), the minimum standard is: - a Bachelor of Law Degree (L.LB or L. LL).
• Good cumulative grade point average in courses pursued for law degree and an acceptable combination of education, training or experience.
• Language Proficiency: English or French essential and possibility of bilingual positions at the BBB/BBB level.
• Experience in legal research and writing.
• Knowledge of the Department of Justice and its mandate.
• Knowledge of various federal laws and regulations.
• Capacity to analyze legal principles and/or legal problems from a variety of perspectives.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Team Work

To work in collaboration with various partners and to bring a significant contribution to the collective effort in order to achieve the established goals.

Commitment and ethics

Adhere to the values and goals of the Department of Justice and to act in the public interest.

Judgment

Draw logical conclusions from facts presented or observed in a given situation.

Asset Qualifications

• Master’s degree in other related fields such as law, policy, political sciences, etc.
• Preference may be given to applicants with both a common law and a civil law degree.
• Experience working in a legal environment.
• Experience providing legal analysis to clients.
• Knowledge of different government departments or Justice’s departmental clients.

Operational Requirements

• Candidates must be flexible with respect to hours of work, lunch breaks and rest periods.
• Candidates will be required to travel occasionally.

Conditions of Employment

• Secret security clearance
• Candidates must meet and maintain the above condition of employment throughout their employment.
• Candidates may be required to meet the asset qualifications or the organizational needs, depending on the requirements of the specific position being staffed.
• Due to the number of applicants and the strict deadlines imposed by the legal governing bodies in Ontario and Quebec, it may be necessary to impose a limit on the maximum number of applicants to be interviewed.
