ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA, April 10, 2012 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:

The Honourable Edward W. Ducharme, the Regional Senior Judge of the Superior Court of Justice for the South West Region (London), is appointed a judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal, to replace Mr. Justice M. Moldaver, who was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada on October 21, 2011.

Mr. Justice Ducharme received Bachelor of Arts and Master degrees in English from the University of Windsor, as well as a Doctorate of Philosophy in English and Education from the University of Michigan in 1980. He received a Bachelor of Laws in 1985 and was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1987.

Mr. Justice Ducharme was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in 2002. In 2004, he was appointed local administrative justice for Chatham-Kent and Regional Senior Judge for the Southwest Region in 2009. He has been a member of the Clerkship Committee for the Superior Court of Justice since 2006 and a member of the Education Committee from 2005 to 2008. He is the author of numerous papers and, since his appointment, has been a frequent speaker.

Prior to his appointment, he was a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada from 1999 to 2002 and law a partner with Ducharme Fox LLP in Windsor. His main areas of practice were employment law and labour relations.

The Honourable Sarah E. Pepall, a judge of the Superior Court of Justice, is appointed a judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal, to replace Madam Justice A. Karakatsanis, who was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada on October 21, 2011.

Madam Justice Pepall received a Bachelor of Laws from McGill University and a Masters of Law from Osgoode Hall Law School.  She was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1978.

Madam Justice Pepall was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice (Toronto) in 1999. She has previously served as Team Leader of the Commercial List and is a past president of the Ontario Superior Court Judges’ Association.

Prior to her appointment, she was a managing partner at McMillan Binch (now McMillan LLP), where her main areas of practice were civil and commercial litigation.

The Honourable James R. H. Turnbull, a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, is appointed Regional Senior Judge of the Central South Region, to replace Mr. Justice C.S. Glithero, who has been re-appointed as a puisne judge of the Ontario Superior Court in Simcoe, effective April 30, 2012.

Mr. Justice Turnbull received a Bachelor of Arts from McMaster University in 1970. He also received a Bachelor of Laws from Queen’s University in 1970 and a Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1978. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1973.

Prior to his appointment to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in 2005, he was a partner with Mackesy Smye in Hamilton. His main areas of practice were administrative law, civil litigation and mediation.

In the past, Mr. Justice Turnbull served as President and Trustee of the Hamilton Law Association and had been a member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, the Advocates Society and the American Trial Lawyers Association.

The Honourable C. Stephen Glithero, the Regional Senior Judge of the Central South Region, is re-appointed as a puisne judge of the Superior Court of Justice in Simcoe, to replace Mr. Justice J.R.H. Turnbull.

Mr. Justice Glithero received a Bachelor of Arts in 1967 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1970 from the University of Western Ontario, and was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1972.  He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1982.

Prior to his appointment as Regional Senior Justice of the Central South Region in 2006, he had been a judge of the Superior Court of Justice since 1992. He was the local administrative justice for Kitchener from 2002 to 2006.

The Honourable Denise M. Korpan, a lawyer with Siskinds LLP in London, is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice, Family Division, in London, to replace Madam Justice M.E. Marshman, who elected to become a supernumerary judge as of November 23, 2011.

Madam Justice Korpan received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario in 1979 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Ottawa in 1980. She was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1981.

Madam Justice Korpan was an associate lawyer with Siskinds LLP in London from 1987 to 1990, when she became partner. She had been an associate with Gunn and Associates in St. Thomas from 1981 to 1987. Her main area of practice was family law, with some estate litigation.

Madam Justice Korpan was a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Middlesex Family Lawyers Association and the Advocates Society. She has been a member of the Board of Directors of Foundation Western since 2005 and chair of the Development Committee since 2006.

She was a lecturer at various seminars and a volunteer for the Diabetes Association, Parents Without Partners and a shelter for abused women.

Unless indicated otherwise, these appointments are effective immediately.
