Program Description
- Goals & Objectives:
The main objectives of the program are to: increase awareness of violence as a phenomenon by identifying the ways in which people who commit violent acts are responsible for them; provide information about appropriate and inappropriate attitudes and behaviours in a person's exercise of control over someone else; offer teenagers positive and healthy alternatives in their relationships; encourage constructive and non-judgemental dialogue about the phenomenon of violence; and tell participants about, or refer them to, available support resources concerning violence.
- Traditional/Indigenous ways:
N/A
- Components of program:
The program consists of a kit that teachers, youth workers and other individuals who are involved with youth can use to explore and create dialogue about the themes of: jealousy, psychological violence, sexual violence and physical violence. This is done through the use of educational videos that are specific to each theme and are accompanied by a number of questions to encourage dialogue. It is designed to be adapted to a workshop format consisting of four sessions of 60 minutes. The facilitators of this program are encouraged to include activities in the workshops (i.e. role play, art therapy) to increase the effectiveness of the learning experience and to help retain the key messages that youth are expected to retain. For each video, there is a suggested approach for running the activity (covering the objectives as well), a number of questions to use to encourage discussion, and content to be further explored (containing additional information related to the theme of the video)
