Black Youth

Black youth are overrepresented in Canada’s youth criminal justice system, both as victims/survivors and convicted persons. This outcome is directly linked to the Government of Canada’s commitment to implementing Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy to address racism and access to justice issues. It further links to Justice Canada’s commitment to address systemic discrimination and the overrepresentation of Black people in the criminal justice system by developing Canada’s Black Justice Strategy. Ensuring that the youth criminal justice system identifies Black youth victims/survivors and accused/convicted persons is critical to knowing if there has been progress in reducing their overrepresentation. This outcome is measured by self-reported victimization and admissions to the correctional system.
