Drug Use and Offending
Figure 1: Public Support for Marijuana Possession 1977-2002
This is a line graph that illustrates Canadians perceptions on the criminalization of marijuana possession from 1977 to 2002.
The Y axis is measured in percentages and increases in increments of 10 from 0 to 50.
The X axis is divided in years for the following years: 1977, 1985, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002.
Two lines are demonstrated. One line shows the proportion of respondents who believe that possession should be a criminal offence another line shows those who believe it should not be an offence.
The two lines diverge demonstrating:
- An upward trend from 1977 when 23% of Canadians believed that marijuana possession should not be an offence, compared to 37% in 2002; and
- A downward trend from 1977 when 35% of Canadian believed marijuana possession should be a criminal offence, compared to 22% in 2002.
